Since the invention of Ballroom dance competitions approximately in early 1920s, dancers were looking for ways to improve their skills to achieve better results. In those days, dance teachers were the main source of information. They taught steps and technique.
As Ballroom and Latin dancing evolved in early 2000s and became to be known as DanceSport, dancers turned into athletes. However, those athletes still sought to acquire the skills and knowledge of sport in order to become “champions.”
As DanceSport evolved into organized activity, some dance teachers evolved into coaches to work more closely with athletes on sport skill development. In addition to regular dance education such as steps and dance technique, DanceSport coaches need to be able to assist athletes with the development of methods and strategies for achieving peak performance and eventually better results. DanceSport became bigger than dance and included such aspects as competitive strategy, training strategy, performance strategy etc.
Whether you are a beginner level dancer thinking of joining your first local competition, more seasoned dancer trying to qualify for Nationals or high level dancer competing at International competitions you can benefit from having a DanceSport coach to achieve your goals. At DanceSport Club we have knowledgeable coaches that compete regularly and have a wealth of information and knowledge to help your competitive Ballroom dance dreams come true.
So, how can we help you?
To win at DanceSport competition first and foremost you have to dance well. Regardless of who is judging your event, when you dance well, you stand out. Our coaches will help you to “clean up” your routines and will work on dance technique appropriate to the style and level you are competing in.
One of the biggest goals of Competitive Ballroom and Latin Coaches is to see the big picture of the direction where your dancing needs to improve to achieve results. Coaches can help you see possibilities where you might not see them. Coaches can stay focused on the goal while you stay focused on preparing and executing to meet the goal. DanceSport coaches act as the lighthouse which is stationary and secure and provides a beacon to direct you when you might lose focus.
With doctors oftentimes people seek second opinion just to see a different point of view. Coaches can play an important role by thinking differently than dancers do, perhaps providing insight or ideas which are difficult to see. Most DanceSport coaches have years of experience competing and teaching and can provide valuable perspective, different point of view or a new piece of information on current situation.
Competitive dancers work had, spend a lot of time practicing, invest significant amounts of money and time in their craft. Many times our perception of a situation is influenced by emotion. For example you practiced hard, but did not achieve results at competition you expected. Or you keep arguing with your partner who is right. When emotions come to play, it is very difficult to see the truth. DanceSport coach can provide a neutral, objective, and constructive view point. They haven’t invested the same emotional energy into whatever situation or experience you’re facing and it’s very helpful to hear a trusted advisor give a realistic view point.
Ultimately some of the biggest value competitive dancers can receive from a good DanceSport coach is positive reinforcement, encouragement, and a motivational kick up the backside. It’s easy to get discouraged along the way when we fail at something, hit a setback, or get rejected for a job or promotion we were after. There are times when dancers need others to come along and encourage them and get them in a positive frame of mind.
